Bishop Real Estate

With its scenic Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountain setting and wide range of recreational opportunities in the area, Bishop is a very desirable place to live. Famous naturalist and author John Muir and nature photographer Ansel Adams both came to California’s Eastern Sierra to capture its beauty. Although it is a relatively small town of 3,500 residents, it is within commuting distance of Mammoth Lakes, a larger community of 7,500 residents, forty miles to the northwest. Bishop is much more affordable than Mammoth Lakes, which is home to the popular Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort. For example, in Mammoth Lakes, as of November 2009, the median price of a home was $480,000, whereas in Bishop the median price was $300,000. Bishop also has a much warmer and less snowy climate than Mammoth Lakes.
Bishop is located within two hours of some of America's finest National Parks including Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Death Valley. The area has much to explore and is perfect for the outdoor adventurist or for someone looking for a slower paced lifestyle. In fact, it was named to National Geographic Adventurer’s magazine in 2007, as one of the United States’ “Top 50 Adventure Towns”.
The Bishop area is somewhat constricted in terms of growth due to it being near the Sierra National Forest, land west of town that is owned by the Paiute Indian Tribe, and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power controls much of the land upstream on the Owens River and surrounding area. Nonetheless, there are typically still dozens of homes and land on the market for buyers to choose from meeting a wide variety of needs and budgets. In Bishop, there is a Coldwell Banker Real Estate Office. Due to its scenic beauty and wide array of recreational opportunities, the city is also popular with retirees, and is home to the Highlands Senior Mobile Home Park.
