Highway 395 in Big Pine

Big Pine is a city of 1,300 residents located fiteen miles south of Bishop in the Owens Valley. It has an elevation of 3,990 feet. The city is on U.S. Highway 395, the main north–south artery through the Owens Valley. Big Pine is also on State Highway 168, which connects the region with Nevda. Big Pine has food and gas services for visitors. Big Pine is also the tribal headquarters for the Big Pine Band of Owens Valley Pauite Shoshone Indians of the Big Pine Reservation. The Owens River flows through two miles east of Big Pine.

Downtown Big Pine

Near Big Pine, there is the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forests. With some trees over 4,000 years old, Bristlecone Pines are the oldest living things in the world. The Palisades Glacier, which is near Big Pine to the west in the Sierra Nevada, is the souternmost glacier in the western hemisphere. At two and a half miles in length, one mile in width and several hundred feet thick the Palisade is also the largest glacier in the Sierra Nevada.
